Building safety leaders to discuss existing building safety
The Building Owners and Managers Association International, the International Code Council, and the National Institute of Building Sciences will convene a panel discussion in West Palm Beach, Fla., in the wake of the Champlain Towers South residential condominium building collapse in Surfside. ANCR issues first community resilience designation
The Alliance for National & Community Resilience (ANCR) issued its first community resilience designation to Martinsville, Va., at a meeting of the city council on July 27, 2021. Martinsville was selected as the initial pilot city for ANCR’s Community Resilience Benchmarks for buildings and housing. The city was awarded an “essential” designation for its building-related activities and an “enhanced” designation for its housing-related initiative. Read more
Code on a Mission campaign toolkit available
The Code Council launched its “Code on a Mission” challenge that aims to have more than one-third of the U.S. population covered by the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) by the end of 2023. A new toolkit supports communities and advocates with the adoption of the 2021 IECC and its appendices, and consideration of the 2021 International Green Construction Code, with various helpful resources. Code Council’s Sara Yerkes to retire
Sara Yerkes, senior vice president of government relations at the International Code Council, is set to retire after spending the last 20 years as a leading voice for the local, state and federal adoption of the Code Council’s building codes and standards.

Just released: 2021 Public Comment Hearing schedule
The 2021 Group A hearing schedule for the Public Comment Hearings being held in Pittsburgh, Pa., is now available. The Public Comment Hearings will start at 8:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021. The schedule anticipates that the hearings will be completed no later than 7:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 26. The hearings will start with the International Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Codes, followed by the International Fire Code and then the building-related codes, starting with the International Property Maintenance Code and then the International Building Code. This year marks the exciting start of a new code development cycle. All Governmental Member Voting Representatives must be validated this year. Richard Anderson will be joining the Code Council as a director of plumbing, mechanical and fuel gas (PMG) resources where he will contribute to developing, coordinating and implementing PMG programs and services related to the International Codes.
The Code Council is currently accepting applications for the Remote Virtual Inspection for Energy and Water Performance in Buildings Standards Committee (ERVI). The Code Council and RESNET have joined together to develop a new standard that will provide guidance for implementing remote virtual inspection for energy code compliance and for building water and energy efficiency performance. Significant changes to the 2021 IBC
A clarification to Section 713.12 (Top of Shaft Enclosure) of the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) states that the three options for termination at the top of a shaft enclosure have been clarified. Learn more

Kylle Marshall tapped for New Mexico State Fire Marshal’s Office
Fire Marshal Kylle Marshall will take over as the state’s bureau chief of fire inspections in his new position with the New Mexico State Fire Marshal’s Office. His goal at the state level will be to continue educating people on the fire code so that they can follow the law and keep themselves safe. “When I go to Santa Fe, I’m strictly going to be there for code enforcement,” Marshall said. “We want to educate the people on the fire code and the requirements as set forth by the state.” Read more
